Need advice on purchase 1916
I can get a 1916 dwm for about 850 now. Here is the description just need some advice on it. Also there are no pics but a 3 day inspection. Let me know if this is a decent deal.
WWI 1916-Dated DWM 9mm Luger with Matching Numbers. Nice example with 93% original blued finish. Extremely fine bore. All matching serial numbers in the 64xxi range with proper unnumbered wood bottom magazine. Wood bottom has small edge chip and initial "H" carved on it. Extremely fine checkered wood grips. |

Without pictures it is impossible to help you with an assessment. If the picture in your post is a picture of the gun, it is not possible to determine qualitative information aobut it.
One can say, that the magazine is not proper. An Imperial Army DWM magazine base is stamped with the gun's serial number with suffix, and a + if it is the spare magazine. An unmarked wood base magazine would be proper for a Commercial or American Eagle Luger, 1900 or 1906 model. The H carved into it destroys any collection value it might otherwise have. An original marked Imperial magazine in good shape might be had for $150 or so. If you decide to go after this Luger, you might consider this nearly valueless magazine as a negotiation point to reduce the price. I would consider paying $850 for an Imperial Army DWM if it was in really excellent original shape with a good magazine. I would prefer to pay a bit less. --Dwight |

Tom, Can't the chrome plating be electronically removed? If so, what would be the condition of the original blue finish?

drbuster,
You are looking at a *mighty* expensive restoration. between the labor involved in the disassembly and stripping PLUS the labor in polishing and restoration, it becomes economically invalid. You still wind up with a restored gun that will command on a good day, about 65% of what an original piece in 80% condition will bring. Restoring an abused gun is not economically a good idea unless the piece is extremely rare (read: worth BIG bucks) or historically significant. My zwei pfennigs Tom A. |
