Default Need a broom handle expert

All,

I n eed to correspond with someone who is an expert on brooms....Someone who flat knows history, SN ranges and contract stuff. Pls contact me off list at catofong@aol.com

After a decade long hiatus, I have begun playing with them again and have a couple of unresolved issues.

BTW, before I became a Lugerphile, I had about 35 brooms at one point.

Thanks,
Tom A.

Tom, I'm no expert on the C96 but I do have an excellent reference on them, "System Mauser, A pictorial History of the Model 1896 Self-Loading Pistol", by John W, Breathed, Jr. and Joseph J. Schroeder, Jr, dated 1967. If you want to drop me a PM with some specific questions I'll gladly try to dig the info out of the book. Serial number ranges of manufacturing are not noted but they do show the serial numbers of the specific models noted in their examination.

Herb,

I am trying to establish whether an early conehammer, SN 6080, that was sold by Pape, Newcastle should have BNP proofing.

TIA,

Tom

Kyrie Elis, I am pretty sure is a broom expert.

here is his website:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/C96_Forum/ ("That Broomhandle Forum")

you can also do a search on his name, and then send him a PM and / or an e-mail.

Tom, here is what the book says--
Standard Cone Hammer Model--Cal: 7.63mm Mauser-Barrel Length: 5.5in
Rear sight: Early adjustable-Grips: Walnut, 23 groove-Safety:early-Firing Pin:early-Trigger:early-Extractor:early-Serial#location: Top of rear grip strap-Proof: German definitive pistol proof, Oberndorf Proof House*
Other markings: Standard chamber marking.
* Comments: Pistols of this type are often found with English dealer's names engraved on frames or barrels, and/or with British proof marks......
One of the pistol serial numbers examined is 6051
It further states that there were four different types of rear sight markings found on this model; two of these were designed specifically for the English trade, but he doesn't elaborate on what those marking are.
Not really enough info here to positively tell you what you want but the serial number range is pretty close.

Thanks Herb; does SN 6051 have the BNP proof or is Joe Schroeder silent on the issue?

Thanks!

Tom,

You can thank the US officer who was in charge of the troops who captured the Oberndorf plant for part of your problems. He decided to have his men burn as many papers as they could find. That is why so little of the information such as you want is available.

Tom, he doesn't state whether it does or not, he gives a lot of serial #'s of the examples he examined but no info as to which ones have the British Nitro Proof stampings, just that it is common to find them, sorry. Additional info, that particular weapon serial number had the rear sight graduated in the 50-500 manner if that is any help.

Thanks all,

Have found the info I needed. Walter, in his Luger Book, states the BP definitive proof came into use C 1904-05; the conehammer I am looking at is pre 1899.

Thanks for the help.
