Vallejo, CA Gun Show...?

Gun show this weekend at the Vallejo, CA fairgrounds from 5-31-03 to 6-1-03...

Just wondering if any LF folks have gone and can recommend if it is worthwhile...from a luger perspective...?

Pete, I used to work very near Vallejo, in Benicia, I can't tell you much about the gun show but the Vallejo cops have a reputation of being some of the dumbest in the state. They have supposedly bungled more stops and busts than any other district in CA. If you decide to go to the show I suggest that you go north to Caligosta and get a room at the Caligosta Spa, great mineral water pool and hot tubs, you will not be disappointed I have been there many times and have enjoyed every one of them, be sure to hit all of the wineries on the way, lots of freebies, and good snacks.

Pete, Since moving from the Bay Area over ten years ago, I haven't been to the Vallejo show, but back then it was a wonderful small show and I picked up a lot of bargains. Being half way between SF and Sacramento, you will see many dealers from both areas. Good luck, TH

Went to the Vallejo Gun show today (Sunday). About 50 tables, alot of collectible militaria. Not one luger!! One P-38. Alot has changed since Tom Heller went a decade ago! The only good buy was the usual wholesale ammo. I guess Reno holds the only Luger mystique for the central western USA.

Dr. Herb, Sorry to hear that the Vallejo show has gone down hill. I once purchased a M1900 US test luger holster at that show for $400 that a walk in had found in Grandpa's old toy chest. I sold it quickly for $800. Wish that I still had it. I'm afraid that the internet is making it very difficult to find any real collectables at show any more. If they are there, they are quickly scooped up by the sharks and put on some auction site. TH

Went to the Vallejo show this Sunday, as well (sorry to have missed you, Doc...).

Not a single luger, but saw two luger holsters and one magazine...

Some of the old timers that had tables did lament how big this show was 8-10 year ago. Now it is only 1/3 the size and nearly 40% of the tables are "non-gun" tables...

Did pick up a nice Ian Hogg book and a few great back copies of The Gun Report...(for $ 0.25 each...).

But even with these finds, I do not think I would repeat the $ 3.00 parking fee and $ 8.00 entry fee to attend this show, again...

I agree with Doc that the Reno and the Las Vegas shows are the ones to go to, for us west-coast folks...

Well,my wife grew up in Vallejo and my Mom in law is still there. I wouldn't go there for anything but my Mom in law, the cops are just plain DUMB and rude too. I grew up in Suisun City and the cops there are just as bad, so I moved to Amador County where the cops are at least friendly.
So, soes anyone have a gun friendly place to retire too yet ?

Torque, I can recall attending a couple of small gun shows in Sutter Creek years ago. Not many vendors, but the food was good and a weekend in the gold country is hard to beat. I'm not sure of the gun laws in Oregon, but the Medford area strikes me as having a similar atmosphere to Sutter Creek. TH

Gun laws in Oregon are pretty good. Private-party handgun sales no problem, NICS background checks required for dealer sales but its a $9.00 or so phone call, no waiting period. The only bad part is, background check required for -all- gun show transfers, conventional wisdom has it that this is responsible for deterioration of gun shows in Oregon.

Don't know details of concealed carry, do know that it requires training, appears to be pretty easy beyond that.

Your problem should be solved if you just move OUT of the Peoples Republic of California...

Sounds like you need to move east until you are at least on the other side of the San Andreas fault to retire...

I can vouch for the states of Pennsylvania and Virginia... Stay away from Maryland...and I have heard nice things about Arizona and New Mexico...

FL is also great on gun laws. If you wear a white hat, getting a CCW is straightforward. no problems with private sales, big magazines, assault rifles or gun shows. Also about 25 states reciprocate with FL on CCWs.

As soon as I retired I moved to Utah. I lived in Kalifornia for 27 years and hated it. That state never did anything for me, only to me. I had been in Utah for about 2 months, took the test and 5 weeks later had my CCW license. Utah has a 'must issue' law, if you are clean they 'must issue' the permit. Street sales at flea markets of all types of firearms are common place, only problem is these cowboys price thier guns like they were made of solid gold.

Maybe you should put New Jersey in there with Maryland. Everything I hear about that state makes it sound bad for gun guys.

OH YES Norm... NJ is THE anti-gun state on the EAST coast... (I would say Maryland is a close second and gaining)

The only reason it exists is so the folks can make it from eastern PA to NY without getting wet...

(Seriously... it is a pretty state but it sure is down on guns!)
