I understand that the luger ammo made was 124 grs. But what was the velocity of them at muzzle. i have tried many usa brands and never got acceptable reliability out of my lugers. I had found at one time some surplus lapua that worked perfect. Who makes the round that cycles without failing? American ammo just seems wimpy no matter what caliber/gun i use. Considering reloading but to what velocity?

I load the 124s to around 1175 fps for standard models and to around 1250fps for Artillerys

I didn't realize how well a Luger shot until I started reloading. I use 124g lead round nose rather "warmly" loaded but well under max, really made a difference in functioning and fun. If you aren't that interested in trying that I suggest get a replacement main spring kit and use a weaker spring.

I shoot Wal-Mart cheapo bulk-pack Winchester (115 grain) and CCI Blazer, also 115g. Both these rounds function with utmost reliability in the S/42 4", custom 5", and two Artilleries I shoot. I have gone through hundreds of rounds a month with almost no malfunctions, as long as I keep the guns clean.

Don't overlook lighter bullets. I stumbled onto 95gr Winchester
soft points and they made my byf 42 function great. I could go
through several magazines without failure. Unfortunately they
don't exist anymore. Take a look at Vihtavouri's data for 3N37. It
has got to be the highest performance data I've seen listed by a
powder manufacturer...

My Lugers function perfectly with Wallymart cheapo ammo now since they are broken in. They all go 200 or more rounds between cleanings.

I tried V3N37 in 3 P.38"s today, and it shot 6" groups! I haven"t tried it in my Lugers yet. It would be hard to beat Unique or Herco, but I thought I would try some modern powder.

I load Unique powder for 30 Luger and 9mm in the 4" models and I load Blue dot powder for the 8" Artillery models. 124 gr UMC Yellow box gets the Thor nod when I buy it factory loaded.
