Interesting holster

I was at a friends house today and he showed me this holster. It is a definate bring-back, came with a pistol he has.

Overall, not too weird, except the tool pouch is pig-skin?

Stepping out of my element (not the first time I have made a fool of myself), just from the physical evidence presented, the tool pocket is far too pristine to match the rest of what is a very nice holster. Those edges on the leather of the pocket are way too fresh to be part of a '41 holster. Jerry Burney...chime in here.

Hi Ed,

Don't assume that pebble grained leather is pigskin. From my observations there was far more pebble grained cowhide used by the Germans than pebble grained pigskin. There was some discussion about this issue some time back. My guess is that the pouch is pebble grained cowhide. Looking at the unfinished side of the leather can usually give you the answer. Cowhide will be pretty consistent in texture while pigskin will have a pattern and, sometimes, bristle holes.

I don't have any photos of it but the tool pouch in my 1941 holster is also pebble grained...

Ed, First, Thanks for your visits to me at the VA hospital in Denver. They were a real bright spot in an otherwise dark hour. I spent two weeks there and I have to tell all you Vets out there if you need hospitalization go to your VA. Best Hospital and most dedicated people I have ever seen.

This holster looks correct in all respects. The pebble grain leather is certainly normal for small parts on P-08 holsters. Especially tool pouches.

The photo Pete shows of a P-08 with a mag pouch of pebble grain is unusual, not often encountered, but I would surmise that in shops that made many types of holsters such as the soft shell P-38 of pebble grain it would occur to a Sattler to pick up a handy piece of leather to complete an order and if there were no directive specifically prohibiting it, why not?
As leon says, pigskin is different from normal cow hide that has had the pebble grain stamped into it's surface. In a previous discussion it was demonstrated that pigskin can, and did, also recieve this pebble grain treatment and was used on German Military holsters.
Ron, I know what you are trying to say about the apparent newness of this tool pocket but I think it is original to the holster. I took a good long look at it and the edges have enough patina to them and the stitching is certainly 50 years old or more. Oddly enough interior tool pockets can receive little or no use over the years or be worn out completely. I guess it comes from the owner losing the tool early on or something. On my repair bench I remove quite a few of these and a surprising number of them look like new for some reason. I would like to get a look at the metal closure stud on this one. That piece is an important factor not shown in these photo's.
This holster actually looks to be in excellent shape, not worn much at all at the hinge or the closure strap. I would guess it spent the last fifty years in a drawer. Jerry Burney

Tom, Pretty much...Still have some restrictions placed by the Surgeon but can walk a mile or so a day. Just takes time. Ellie is working me over pretty good, can't get away with anything.

Have been back to work restoring holsters so I guess it will get back to normal soon enough.

Probably won't do any PLF's this morning though!
