Post New Reference - Luger Articles Listing!

Through the kind research efforts and courtesy of Lugerforum Member Johnny C. Kitchens, we have a new feature available for reference on the forum.

This link will open a PDF file of a single page that details all the known articles ever written in major publications about our venerable Luger pistol. (Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to read this file,-you can download the reader from Adobe.com)

Thanks from all of us Johnny!

I did not see a listing for "The Parabellum Story" by Jan Stevenson that ran in Gunfacts from June 1969 to March 1970. I read most of it at the time and thought that it was very good.

Does anyone have a copy of the articles? Or do you know if the parent company of the magazine is still around?

Cool

Steve,

I don't have that one, but I have "Luger Lovers Abound" by Harry Jones from the Jan 1961 issue of Shooting Times. The publication has been defunct for many years. <img border="0" alt="[crying]" title="" src="graemlins/crying.gif" />

Johnny C. Kitchens,

If you update your PDF file with new articles as they are reported, just send it to me and I will replace the current one.

The bibliography of "The Mauser Parabellum" by Francis C Allan lists them as follows:

"Mauser's Mock-Up Parabellum" June 1969
"Part One: The Parabellum Story" July 1969
"Part Two: The Parabellum Story" August 1969
"Part Three: The Parabellum Story" September 1969
"Part Four: The Parabellum Story" Nov/Dec 1969
Part Five: The Parabellum Story" March/April 1970

All in "Gun Facts" magazine

Untill recently, I had the last four parts but seem to have lost them. I have been trying to find copies but cannot even find out who published the magazine. Does anyone know? The articles had a fairly large number of photos of different casting, forging and machining steps. If someone knows what the parent publishing company was, maybe copies could be obtained. Or if anyone knows how to contact Francis C Allan he could help.

I hope that this helps.

Also from the same bibliography:

"Lugers: Mauser Parabellum Commemoratives" by Michael Reese, Guns & Ammo August 1977

"Lugers: Interarms Reveals the NEW P.08" by Michael Reese, Guns & Ammo March 1975

Further looking on my part found another article. My copy is from the 2001 Guns & Ammo Annual pages 22-28. The title is "The 21st-Century Luger" by John Kronfeld. I don't know what month it was published originally.

I am not trying to take anything from Johnny's work! His bibliography certainly took a great deal of work to compile.

Steve,

Francis Allen is a member of this forum but doesn't post much... Do a search in each forum for his name and you can send him a PM when you find one of his posts...

An article that I don't see listed is the one in Man at Arms, vol 24, no 4, 2002 by Dave Norin a member of the American Custom Gunmakers Guild entitled "Spotting Luger Restorations". This is an excellent article with many pictures identifying how to spot restorations that I feel every beginning Luger collector, and some of the oldtimers too, should have in their collection.

A quick look through some of my reference articles that arenâ??t in storage turns up the following additions:

The Latest Automatic Pistol, Literary Digest, 20 July 1901, page 75
The Unknown Story of the Borchardt-Luger, Modern Man, July 1954, page 35
Georg Luger and the $10,000 Carbine, Guns Magazine, March 1967, page 18
Rare Luger Cutaway, Guns Magazine, October 1968, page 25
The Magnificent Borchardt, Guns Magazine, May 1972, page 26
Lugers â?? A Collectorâ??s Guide to Values, Guns & Ammo, 1970 Annual, page 330
Lugers â?? A Collectorâ??s Guide to Values, Guns & Ammo, 1971 Annual, page 278
Mystique of the Luger, Guns & Ammo, 1972 Annual, page 218
A Dutch Luger Treat, American Rifleman, June 1972, page 20
Lugers That Were Never Made!, Arms Gazette, July 1974, page 12
Kriegsmarine, Pistols of the German Navy, Arms Gazette, February 1975, page 12
Imperial Military Lugers, Guns Magazine, May 1975, page 38
The Mauser Parabellum, The Shooters Bible, 1976 Annual, page 52
World of Lugers, Guns Magazine, Part 1, May 1982
Part 2, June 1982
Part 3, July 1982
Borchardt Variations, Guns Illustrated, 1983 Annual, page 78
Guide to 1984 Luger Prices, Guns & Ammo, July 1984, page 47
From Borchardt to Parabellum â?? An Anglo-Swiss Connection, The Journal of the Historical Breechloading Smallarms Association [British], Jun 1996, pages 31-52

I also have pages from a neat article â??The Fabulous Lugerâ? by Hans Tanner, page 163. Unfortunately, the name of the publication is not on the pages, but I think it is an annual from around 1977 by either Guns & Ammo or Gun World.

Also there are the monthly articles by Charles Kenyon in â??The Gun Reportâ? that are excellent reference material, not to mention the bazillion articles in â??AUTOMAGâ?, the monthly journal of the National Automatic Pistol Collectors Association (NAPCA).

For anyone who is interested, I have an extra copy (mint) of the British journal containing the â??From Borchardt to Parabellum â?? An Anglo-Swiss Connectionâ? article by Dr. G. Sturgess. It is an outstanding treatise on early Luger development and a fundamental reference. I had a heck of a time locating copies. It is available to anyone as nuts as I am about reference material for $100. That is what I paid for it about 6 years ago (I said I was nuts), so I am not making any money on the deal.

Johnny C. Kitchens, it seems your Luger-related article list is quickly growing to become at least two full pages!

Johnny, it is no problem if it increases the number of pages... Just add them, make it a PDF and send it on... and I will post it to replace your original file.

If you don't want to go to the bother of making it a PDF file, just save it as an HTML file and send it to me and I will just post the page...

However you want to do it is fine with me.
