Thumbs up Numrich Parts

Ordered some parts from Numrich, and I decided to take a look at one of their “replacement” wood bottomed magazine deals. I was pleasantly surprised. I’m going to ask one of my machinist friends to drill the magazine pin slot when he has some time, then I'll coat it with Tung Oil and install it in my spare mag:

The reason I had to order in the first place was because one of the grip screws on my DWM broke (90 year old metal, go fig), and I had to order a replacement. Numrich sent me two replacement screws, but the diameter is smaller than the original WW1 ones. They hold the grips on adequately though. I was wondering, does anyone have any of the larger diameter grip screws that they might be willing to sell? I’d like to have the larger diameter ones to hold the grips on more securely. I’m curious, are the smaller grip screws WW2 versions, and the larger ones for the WW1 models? Thanks for any help.

Curt,
I'm somewhat surprised to see that these Numrich Wood Bottom Magazines do not come up to the standards that there reputation deserves.
The grain is horizontal in the side view and to even appear close to proper the grain should run vertical along the longest dimension of the magazine.
Just looks strange to me because I'm used to seeing something that appears normal to the standard "Woodies".
Have you given this a thought? I'm not intending to belittle your selection, If its satisfactory to you its not my choice.
Drop me a line at

ViggoG is not telling all, and hopefully I will not embarrass him, but he has made some wood bottom magazines that are really outstanding, excellent grain, very pretty little puppies.

When I first got interested in Lugers I bought a couple of repro wood bottoms from CMR in England. I used these to replace the black plastic bottoms on Mec-Gar mags for my shooters.

Same grain problem. In fact they look exactly like those pictured above; possibly a common source both for CMR and Numrich.

Viggo -

Would love to see some pictures of yours.

Also, G.T. used to make outstanding wood bottoms, but I am not sure he is still doing this.

Luke, I am pleased to say that I am the owner of a Viggo G. Dereng magazine bottom installed by the master himself of one of my Dad's original but damaged WW2 magazine bodies...

If beauty in walnut is what you are looking for, Viggo can fill your needs. G.T. still has all the equipment, but I don't know if he is actively producing mag bottoms at the moment. I would recommend that you email him to find out if that is the route you wish to take...

We are indeed blessed to have both G.T. and ViggoG as members of this forum.

I believe that GT is quite busy just now trying to produce a perfect alum mag bottom. I do have most of his wood variations (standard unmarked, Navy concentric circle type, either marked "Cal.9m/m" etc) currently in stock. Tom H.

Hey Tom, you are right!! I have a bunch of GT's wood magazine bottoms installed by him in my magazine tubes. They are super quality and can be made to match most any wood grip coloration. I saw GT a few weeks ago and he still has some of his magazine bottoms stock.

GTs are the best mag bottoms, I have a couple of the aluminum ones too! But I think they were prototype runs. EXCELLENT!!!! Kind of reads like "The usual Suspects" Hugh Clark-grips & Baby Lugers, Jerry Burnery-Leather work, GT-Mag Bottoms and magazine repairs, Les Center-Superb custom cases, Tom Heller-parts! What a list of talents and resources we have! I LOVE IT!!!

AFAIK, there is no difference in Luger grip screws from WW1 through WWII. The Numrich screws are too small and a rather poor reproduction.

Viggo,

Are any of these for sale? If yes, how much and how does a person go about ordering some? I too have some MecGar magazines that would look better with wood bottoms.

Hello to all! The mag. bottoms made by Viggo G look to be of outstanding quality! And, he was kind enough to consult me as to there manufacture and subsequent sale, which was a very gracious and frindly gesture.... I personally feel that if you purchase his, or my mag.bottoms, you are at the very least, getting the "as specified" part, correct in all dimensions... I have, at this point, elected to sell my product thru representitive sites, when available... this would be Thor, & Tom Heller. All my mag. bottom options, either custom or standard, can be accessed thru these two sources.... I feel very good about having them on my team.... (thanks to both of them!) Viggo, keep up the good work, I realize the sacrifice and effort it takes to make just one correct part... much less a run of them!
Thanks to all for the kind words and support! till...later...GT

I have a couple of Vigs Luger wood bottom pieces. I've not seen G.Ts., but comparing Vigs to others on the market, there is no comparison. Vigs are top quality, top of the line, and I might add I'm very proud to own them. Thanks Vig, a great job, well done.....Bob
