Beautifull Luger and unknown origin. Please help me to figure out it.

My grandmother was born in Argentina in 1936, daughter of german family. Around 1945, a german soldier appeared in their farm at the Patagonia. He didn't speak spanish and he was severely dehydrated and exhausted. My great grandmother spoke with him, and he spent two nights under a huge ombu tree. One day when my great grandmother had gone to visit him, he was already gone nobody knows where. He left his his uniform and his Luger at the place with two bullets. Some years ago my grandmother gave it to me and I really want to know about it.

I am pretty sure the safety position is standard for grip safety Luger.

I don't see any Navy markings or rear sight

Hello, maybe i dont know too many things about the pistol. Would you explain me the findings found? It is posible to figure out the owner ? What do you valorate in your assesment in order to fix and value ?

It's not a military pistol, but was made for the private/commercial market well before WWI.

Its 6" barrel is somewhat out of the ordinary, but not particularly uncommon.

It is essentially impossible to determine anything about its previous owners beyond your story.

Its value depends in large part on its condition and originality, both of which appear very good. $2k, more or less, would be a reasonable ballpark for what it might fetch when sold, but it also would depend on the exact price agreed to by both buyer and seller.

I recommend that if you truly have interest in Luger pistols you should do lots of reading of the available info here on the forum. World class collectors and authors are members. One consolidated source for info is the FAQ linked ta the top of every page.

It’s not a 6” barrel but a standard 4.75” one. It’s mostly a standard “new model” 1906 commercial in .30 cal for non-export sale, which makes the origin story provided interesting. That and the Gesichert instead of leaving the “safe” position in the white as seen on many of the pre-war new model setups like both of my model 1906’s.

There is not very much for commercial lugers - it's an area that could use a good reference.
We do have a commercial luger database, but I already checked and this one is not on it.


However, a group of the Hans Tauscher 9mm lugers comes up around 48502.
Below is an excerpt from Dwight Gruber's DWM Commercial Luger Database (ver 5) 2014,
which is in the Commercial Lugers section.

You can measure the barrel from the muzzle end to the breech opening.

You are correct, Quintin! Somebody mentioned "Navy" in a comment, and I didn't look back at the pics to check.

The lower position of the GESICHERT is found on all Lugers with grip safeties. In the event that it's in the white instead, it was milled into the surface after bluing.

p.s. I think either the up or down safety can be mechanically rearranged a bit so as to function in the reverse of what would be expected for the variation.
