Lugers that eject brass into the next county

I enjoy shooting my 30 cal. luger at our outdoor range.
Thing is, the brass goes flying off to never never land! My store of brass is dwindling.
Is there any way besides some sort of brass catcher to lessen the ejection of brass?
Just curious.

Not without screwing up the function of the pistol.

Figure out which direction the brass goes, you may need a spotter; then put down a tarp or sheet in that area.

GT had a supply of brass in the past, you may want to see if he has more and buy some.
His price was quite reasonable.

Tom,

Ejecting brass into the next county could be a sign of a weak recoil spring or a hot load.

My experience has been that wherever you put down the tarp, that is the one place the brass won't land (Murphy's Law).

Get a bigger tarp !

It's a long walk to the next county to place the tarp! Brass never lands in a nice neat pile. a 20 foot diameter tarp would be needed.
All my reloads are just stout enough to insure critical functions of the P08, no hot loads

At my range the firing line is covered by a metal shed roof. The Luger ejects straight up, the case ricochets off the roof and then bounces off of my bald head. Sometimes a case goes down the front of my shirt - boy are they hot.

I made a kind of screened-in enclosure by repurposing some screen door panels for wide sliding doors because I had so much brass loss in the grass--tarp or no tarp. The screens were good because they didn't contain the pressure wave/noise within the structure. I mounted the thing on wheels, so it was handier to roll out and stand under it while shooting than spreading out a tarp. But danged if plenty of the brass didn't find its way to oblivion nonetheless.

My empty brass always launched up on top of the ceiling of the shooting point. Once a range officer came running to me, saying my pistol did not eject, because he saw no brass falling.

I and a friend of mine and his son were shooting my shooter luger at a range one day. The son's pants were low enough to show his plumbers crack when he was squatted down shooting.
An empty case from the luger went over his head, down his back and into the gap between shirt and pants just in the right spot. He came straight up, did about 4 or 5 quick steps with sounds of pain. So be sure everything is well covered when shooting the luger pistols.

One advantage my shooter P.38 has over my shooter lugers is that the empty brass always falls in a close by area to my left. There is no searching around for maybe 1/2 the fired cases (that can be found in the county) from the luger. My first gun love are lugers but P.38's are a close second.

I shoot with a buddy. He stands to the side and holds a medium size piece of cardboard over the top of the pistol, as close to the pistol as possible without disturbing the sight picture. The rounds usually land close to my feet. Then, I hold the cardboard for him. I will usually recover over 45 cases out of a box of 50.

My Russian InTerarms Mauser ejects about 25 feet up and it seems it takes 2 seconds for them to land. I have discovered some shells in the gutters...
