Post Odd Magazine Marking

See picture below. This early DWM magazine bottom has the standard "5717e" marking but has been stamped over with a large, upside-down, "07."

One theory is that this was an armorer's property mark.

Any other thoughts, comments?

Thanks
Luke

Thanks, Hugh.

Actually, it was probably a WW-I James Bond pistol.

Luke:

A property mark is as good and rational an explanation as any. If the mag had been renumbered to another gun, the old serial most likely would have X'ed out.

Hello Luke,
It is for sure a strange marked magazine to me! Navy mag's are the only ones I have seen with the figures running in that direction. Could the 07 possibly be a year date like found on holsters?

See Still, Imperial Lugers pg.88.

Luke;

Perhaps of some small interest, the mag bottom pictured in Still's book is numbered 5184 e.

Luke,

For what it's worth, the 5717 "e" looks like a script "b" to me, which would mean that the magazine probably came from a 1910 model, if it is an "e" then it would have to have come from a 1911 model (the only year they made e blocks with the old style magazine numbering). The "07" is obviously a reference to agent 007, greatly increasing its collector value on E-Bay. KFS

The letter suffix appears to be the third variation of the letter e as shown in Costanzo.
