I agree with you, I didn't go to that forum very often, I have always followed much more this one, although I realize that the participants in both the forums are probably the same people, but I have always considered this forum a bit like a group of friends who meet from time to time to chat about the common passion.

Its different but not totally weird - mainly the names of how to do things changed.

Private messages is now Conversations
----------------
When you open the page, it comes up with newest posts - but to the right you can pull down full forum and it essentially looks the same

The issue is what you said its been 18 years and the owners (guys who bought gunboards and many others, 3 or 4 years ago, decided to make changes).

They did not consult with moderators at all.

The Jan Still board was sold years ago and then that company sold out to a Canadian company called "VerticalScope". The servers are under control of those people.

The new forum software is called "ZenForo".

I don't defend their actions in any way. Best place to discuss that board and their software is over there.

XenForo, the new forum software, was actually developed by the same team responsible for the forum software used here which is vBulletin.

It's been around for about a decade, so not exactly new. But it is largely based on the forum format used here.

The biggest difference is that XenForo is more tailored towards mobile devices, while vBulletin has an interface that is PC based.

The name (Xen) also implies it's underlying architecture helps to run the software better on open source virtualization platforms like XenServer. Virtualization made a huge leap the last decade.

VerticalScope must be incompetent - the web site is lame and harder to navigate than every before.
What a loss.....

I am closing this so that the discussion can continue elsewhere.

Verticalscope's activities are completely unrelated to this site, and it's not appropriate to discuss them here.

There are waaaay too many adds for my liking. I get the feeling that the new format is there only to mine data on the members. Leaves my with a uncomfortable feeling. I don't think I will be going there much more either. Its a shame that Jan's old site has chosen this direction.
