2 numbers on my 1920 Commercial Breechblock?
Hey everyone, I am new to here and am Looking for some help in identifying my Luger that I bought in January. Based on what I've read in other threads and looked up from Jan Still, I have gathered that I own a 1920 (1923) Commercial in .30 Luger (7.65x21). My question is about a few of the parts, particularly the Breechblock. I know these lugers were made using already manufactured parts leftover from the war, but the breechblock has the matching number (95) on the left side near the joint, but on the back near the firing pin it is also marked "15". Is this a force match, a mistake in original numbering, or what? Ill post a lot of the pictures because it looks like a very nice example overall.

The "15" is an assembly or manufacturing mark and has nothing to do with the serial number assigned to the gun. The one on the breechblock side is the correct one.

Thank you! In that case it is an all matching one (including 1 magazine) Curiously, it also has the "Germany" stamp on the reciever as though it was marked for export sale but it came with a Nazi luger holster and I was told that it was a bringback (no papers). Regardless, the pistol and holster as standalone items made the purchase worth it, but what are the odds the pistol and holster were actually taken from a German as a pair?

I'd have to say very low; sounds like one of those "confused" stories.

That was something I figured as soon as I saw the export stamp. The fact it was a commercial issue didn't bother me, in fact that script S in the frame could also mean that it was issued to a staff officer IIRC, but the export stamp tells me that it was shipped out in the 20's for private sale abroad. The closest thing I could think of is that a German family bought it in the states and then emigrated back to Hitler's Reich and became an officer and kept the pistol, but that seems incredibly far fetched. Either way, $1500 for the Luger and the holster together is more than enough of a bargain for me, regardless of backstory.

Update for anyone who cares. Took the old girl out to the range today and put 100 rounds of Fiocchi through it without any malfunctions or FTF. It was my first time shooting a Luger and wow it was just heavenly to do so. Its a shame that it is all matching and so I dont want to risk breaking it by shooting it any more.

The S in the frame is the stamp of a DWM factory inspector. It has nothing to do with an army "Stab" (Staff) officer.

You’ll probably need to post pictures for much help with identifying.
And oh man, I really didn’t do enough reading before I bought that one. Lucked out that I didn’t get screwed over on it.

it happens to the best of us, even older collectors. We get excited, over-spend or over-look.

My breechblock looks just like yours in the second pic; two-digit number on the end of the breechblock (matching the extractor, in my case), but no other markings.

At least in this case all ended well! I hear and see a few stories on here where it hasn’t.

I just purchased serial number 3841. Just “DWM” on the top of the receiver like the one picture above. It has an upright “N” under a crown on the left side. Under the serial number on the receiver and the barrel it appears to have a small cursive letter “h”.?? The gun is not marked “GERMANY” anywhere that I can see. The number “41” appears as it should in several places, but the hold open latch is marked with a number “56”. The breach block has the number “95” on the front as the picture above is marked with a "15".
I tried to send Dwight the info but the email from the sticky came back as undeliverable. If you read this and want the info and any pictures let me know. Lyle Pfeifer WA state |
