Re: Luger Grips
Hugh, the edge seems to have a high polish/oil finish? Any thoughts on it? Ted

Re: Luger Grips
Ted,
I can go two ways; I can finish them in the standard lightly treated BLO finish; or go the whole hog stock filler and polish finish as these are. Cost would be more for the highly finished ones due to extra time and labor to finish them before checkering. |

Re: Luger Grips
Hugh,
I think the grips are great. Please tell me about the safety system on that gun. I have not seen that before. Do you want to sell the gun? Rod |

Rod, ...
The picture is from the Swiss Luger book like the one on ebay now. It is a transition model between the Borchardt and the Luger. There were only 5 made, I believe.

Re:Luger Grips
Hugh, I would really like a set of the 'ultimate grade' grips with the border and high polished finish. The picture of the transitional pistol looks like a cherry or plum stain or maybe even the color of the wood. It would be cool to get with G.T. and see if a matching set of grips and clips could be arranged. G.T. are you reading this?

Re:Luger Grips
Hi Bill, If we can get the right wood.....the bottoms would be no problem, I will be on the lookout for some nice European walnut (100 yrs old or better!) .....till...later...G.T.

Re: Luger Grips
I believe the grips on the pictured gun are English or French Walnut (there is really very little difference) that has had the grain filled and a hand rubbed finish applied, then checkered. I can get Nill Griffe grips in European Walnut that are uncheckered and finish them and checker with the border; but final price is going to be around $125.
If I use the Cocobolo grips from SARCO I can do them for $85. Does this throw cold water on anyones ardor to own a pair? |

Re: Luger Grips
Hugh, from my knothole (pun intended) $85-125 for the grips we are discussing is totally acceptable. I would really like to see an example of English Walnut vs. the Cocobolo though. Which wood is lightest in color? I think I have some cocobolo wood on a stainless Automag..it is pretty nice. (That reddish grip with the matching mag bottom does make my mouth water, though).

Re: Luger Grips
Bill;
They are probably a very light Walnut; I have seen some European walnut that is almost yellow even after a finish has been applied. I can stain walnut to have the reddish color of the grips on that transition Luger. I agree that it is a beautiful color on those grips. The Cocobolo wood is a beautiful wood and comes in a variety of colors, some with plain grain and some with nicely figured grain. I usually order a dozen at a time from SARCO and get a mixture of dark and light grips. I presently have several pair of light blonde Cocobolo. I have also seen Cocobolo that is the same reddish color that the grips in the picture have. I will pick out a pretty pair of what I have on hand and do the border checkering on them and post on this board for everyone to see. Then you can decide how you like them. It will probably be a couple of weeks, as I you guys keep sending me old grips to redo and I need to work on the baby also. I am also refinishing the stock on a Mannlicher Schoenauer that I just bought. |

Re: Luger Grips
You hit the nail on the head! Custom grips on a custom gun. Notice the wood bottom matches the grip wood. Lighter grips, nice rust blue, shiny straw..what more can anyone ask for?
