Smile Reproduction small box for Erma .22 conversion for P 08 -

Ed had two of these for sale a couple weeks back.
Someone had done a good job cloning the small box that was used for storage of these conversion kits. The compartments are self-explanatory,
except for the lower right one in the last picture- it is for the 9mm ejector which must be removed from the luger upper to install the kit.

Unfortunately the lids and bases had warped, and the boxes would not close.

So after a couple days in the wood shop, re-fitting the compartments, and repairing the latch mechanism one of the boxes is in order for its intended use!

I have one more to re-work and will likely pass it along to an interested luger collector.

Thanks Ed.

it takes about 8 hours of hand work to do the re-work. It would be quicker if the guy had not stained the original boxes. One can't get the stain out of the compartments, that's why they are black.
Natural or "blond" is the color of the original boxes of the era; some of the long boxes may have been painted flat green.

PS-
If anyone has a spare knurled nut for the barrel, I could use one. The original kit came with two; mine only one.
I bought one from Sarco, but it is larger in diameter, ok for using installed, but won't fit in the box!

Don, if it takes 8 hours to rework one of these boxes, how long would it take to make one from scratch (no finish applied) just plain box.

Hugh,
I have not started a box from "scratch", these were already built when I got them.
Just not usable, because of being warped. Removing the warp required re-cutting the inlets to make them deep enough again.

A new box might actually take less time; as I would not paint the inlet areas, but leave them natural like the originals. These are painted because the boxes were stained a red brown, which had to be removed from the flat areas, but is near impossible to get out of the inlet areas.

The big challenge is the latch, which is unlike any US latch I have seen. The original maker made these from scratch also, from solid steel material, way too hard to duplicate. There may be something like them available in Germany, but I have not looked.

Don, are these commercial .22 ERMA conversion unit boxes??? They look much more refined than the pics I looked at in TBLAP...

Your thread had stuck in my mind, as my Nambu, Lahti, and even my artillery Luger long-barrel conversions just sit in a cardboard box. I currently have a slab of soft Pine on my mill and just finished inletting it for the 'artillery' Nambu barrel. Next week I'll work on adding a magazine, bolt, and cocking knob inlet. But my plan was to make it as crude as the German wartime inletted boxes.

A "Gonzo" Nambu parts box...I might even try to age it...
