Default Neighbor has offered to sell me this Luger

He has had the Luger for some time, his uncle brought it back from WWII and told him to take care of it. I've inquired about buying it for years and he has always said no, he is giving it to his nephew.

He is now hard up for money, and said he would agree to sell it.

He was once told by a gun store it was worth $1500, but it seemed high to me.
I asked on another general gun forum and most posters said $1500 was way overpriced.
I have also posted on another Luger forum this morning to get a larger pool of opinions as to the actual value.

I suspect when I let him know most folks don't feel it is worth $1500, he may ask what I would be willing to pay, so if someone could give me an idea I'd appreciate it!

It is a non-matching gun, the trigger side plate doesn't match, and the one mag is not authentic or matching as it has no markings on it at all.

No rust or pitting, bore seems nice, action feels smooth and crisp, bluing worn away in a few spots. The end of the takedown pin looks dimpled like it had been hammered out.

I have pics on this page, I apologize in advance for the poor quality of them.

Thanks for any info and pricing help!

Appears to be a 1938 Mauser, unbuffed, but with the comment 'his uncle brought it back from WWII' I would expect it to be all matching [except magazine].

Pics are too big for my dial-up to fully load, but if mismatched it would go for around $850-$1000...

I'm thinking that the takedown lever is a non-stock item, certainly home-checkered if not home-made. That and the side plate hurt its value among collectors, to the sub-$1000 range. Overall, otherwise, it looks like a decent old gun, and it may make a fine shooter.

I agree with the above. The non matching side plate, (and it would be VERY difficult to match a Mauser, since internal numbers must be right as well) and what looks like an after market takedown lever with no matching number would relegate this pistol into the $800 range, in my market.

Brian

If you could post some detailed pictures some of us would be able to give you an unbiased opinion about that Luger.
