new to the world of lugers

hello all...the name is justin and ive recently bought up all the firearms that ive been wanting for practical uses, now i feel its time to just start collecting real beautiful masterpieces. ive been looking at phoenix investment for my go to when i decide to make a purchase on a beautiful luger but ive read a few posts on here saying not to, looks like they have some nice ones, and their only 2 hours from me! any who, hopefully i can join the luger club soon and get some pics posted up and lookin forward to picking the brains of those on here who know the ins and outs of the P08!

You came upon the finest group of collectors anywhere and the one forum dedicated exclusively to lugers. Your topic will be reviewed by hundreds allowing you the most current knowledge anywhere! The more info you provides the more accurate the opinions. Try attaching the photos of your gun. Don't be affraid, soon it will become second nature! You might get questions reguarding certain aspects of your gun or any personal info that you might have or don't know. The reason for such scruitany is that there are hundred of models and variations. You will become addicted. Its probobly one of my only heathly ones. You can also send a private message to any fellow member at anytime for answers questions or mearly friendship! Just highlight their handle or nickname!! Alan is right. This is a very big subject, so try to decide what model bests excites the imagination. WW1, WW2, Nazi, Imperial Germany, commercial, pre-WW1 models, Swiss, Portugese, Persian, 4", Naval, Artillery , Carbine, etc?
Make this determination before you decide where to spend your money.
And welcome aboard, it really is a facinating subject.

I totally agree with Eric's welcome showing, as usual, a lot of his "ENTHUSIASM"; and to me this is the magic word that gives a meaning to our deep interest in guns in general and in "Lugers" in particular. You'll have to start from somewhere, and you'll probably make a lot of mistakes, like everybody else. Reading on Lugers, which unless several other guns is a wide and complicated topic, will help you a lot, and if you'll browse in this site you'll surely find all the necessary instructions also for your first steps in the Luger World.

thanks for the warm welcomes...choosing a model that fits my imagination is difficult indeed considering the vast array of models out there, would it be too bold to hope for a nazi model?? probably for my wallet...

Not at all. WW2 German guns seem to run just a little bit higher, and are a bit less finely finished, but have the best metallurgy and many think that they are the most shootable. Go to Simpson, Ltd. and stroll their web site for ideas.

I also second the idea of Simpson. I've bought from them before. You might want to look at the Legacy Collectible site as well.

Unless you've won the lottery and you're drowning in money, and don't partciularly care if your Luger is legitimate or not, I'd stay as far away from Phoenix as you can....a couple of time zones would be safe

Can't say much about advice, folks above stated well, figure the type and model you like

I would suggest you buy some books first (see book reviews to get an idea I think in the New Collectors area)

Many folks don't do it, but buying books first saves you a lot of money in the long run

Buying books and using them is the best advice; next is don't buy on emotion. Buy with good ole business sense. Learn the quick things to look for (bad things) and what to stay away from.
Experience is hard to come by. On this forum you can benefit from others' knowledge and experience. Try it - you'll like it.
