Am I correct with..............
this marking? Been reading a lot, trying to learn unit markings as good as most here. Sorry for the photo smallness.
2.E.M.G.IX.35 First I thought it was an Eisenbahn MG pistol but the IX was something different and then I came up with: 2nd Ersatz-Machinengewehr-Kompanie 9th Army Corps weapon #35 Any other stab at it? |

Same size Postie......sorry. The 9th army Corps (Imperial) Germany had nine Machine Gun Companies with a total of 54 machine guns at the outbreak in 1914. I guess they were detached out to it's Inf Regts and Artillery Regt but stayed under Corps control. None are listed in Jeff Nolls book pages of Lugers with those unit markings but does hit a bit on page 163 about Corps machine gun companies with Corps markings. But also, Jeff states there were only three machine gun companies in IX Corps so there is a bit of difference there. Can you verify Klaus? |

In 1913 were only 4 MGK in the IX Army Corps and I think that was the same in 1914.
1. MGK was detached to the I. Bataillon of the Inf. Reg. 75. in Bremen 2. MGK to the III. Batail. of the Gren. Reg. 89. in Schwerin 3. MGK to the I. Batail. of Inf. Reg. 162. in Flensburg 4. MGK to the I. Batail. of the Inf. Reg. 31 in Altona To get information about Ersatz Maschinengewehr Kompagnien is not so easy- I remember the Saxon XVIII. Army Corps and will look what I can find out.. |

I have another which gives no idea of it's assigned unit:
1.E.M.G.10 1st Ersatz-Machinengewehr-Kompany (weapon#)10 What unit would this MG company be assigned to? |

Well, if it has no known assigned unit, I guess I'll have invent one and assign it as the MG unit who had Cpl York, later Sgt York and his men pinned down until he took charge like all good and brave "ARMY" noncoms did and do and took them out like he did shooting turkey and geese back in Tennessee. YA!!! that's it!!!!

In my case, at least the first part applies.

If the number of the Gun is matching with a number of the list and if it does not have the hold open added than it is a Luger of the 1. Ersatz M.G.K. of the Bavarian II. Army Corps.

Than it is part of a Bavarian or Württemberg unit.

What I was saying earlier about Sgt York taking out those machine guns...well, it was the 120th Landwehr Inf Regt which at one time was a combined Div of both Bav and Wurttemberg units. 2nd Landwehr Div. "German First Lieutenant Paul Jürgen Vollmer, commander of the First Battalion, 120th Landwehr Infantry, emptied his pistol trying to kill York while he was contending with the machine guns." |

Check out this link....it can run as a slide show but you won't get the unit, if you go photo by photo, it states the unit below.

Update from what I've been able to research:
70th Landwehr Brigade: Generalmajor Breithaupt 1/,2/,3/5th Landwehr Regiment 1/,2/,3/18th Landwehr Regiment 1st Ersatz Machinegun Company (from Graudenz) but is it the same unit??????? Research can be sometimes very frustrating. On page 144 of History of German Units WWI, the 70th Landwehr Bde was attached to the 6th Cavalry Div (Dismounted) |

Unfortunately, the 70th Ldw Bde is neither a Bav or a Wurttemburg unit so I doubt if it's the same EMG unit.
