Default Problem

Need some adivce. I just fired about 40 or so rounds thru my 37 DWM shooter. I used four different magazines of about 7 rounds each and in every case I had to practically pry each magazine out of the frame. I have never had this problem in the past, what is happening here??

Herb, if its got you stumped then my advice is probably insignificant, but it can't be the magazines, its got to be the gun, the only thing that holds is the magazine catch, is the spring there? It would be easy to lose and the catch won't pop out otherwise. Look if the magazines are scratched from the slot up. Hope you didn't do any damage.

The retractor spring is there, appears to be working, but not real strong, that might be the problem. The grip screws are not protruding into the magazine well, I'll try to get the magazine retractor spring out and check it as it might be the problem, Thanks guys, Herb.

Default Solved it!

The right grip screw was not tightened enough allowing the grip to slide forwrd a very slight amount and blocking the magazine release bolt from fully moving to the right, thereby not fully releasing the magazine. Well, a small lesson learned!! Glad I have this forum to help when it is needed. Thanks. Herb

Aha. I recall now..I had a similar problem, it wasn't that the magazine spring was weak (well, it was that, too...), but the spring had shifted a little bit, was not allowing the catch to operate properly--it bound up a little bit. I shifted it back solidly into the slot in the catch button, and it worked fine.

I don't know if it would matter, but there is a small bump on the spring that goes on the top to keep it from sliding out, if reversed it would fit but might jam.

Long as problems are being aired, why can't I find a hammer on my Luger? I know its got to be in there somewhere cause I've never had a gun before (except an M-60) without one. I've found everything else but that's got me stumped.

First examine the magazine for rubbing marks left by dents.

After removing the magazine release spring, remove the magazine catch and clean the hole and the mag catch body.

Examine the magazine for rubbing by inserting it without the catch and spring.

If it resists, look for bright spots and dents on the mag.

If it is free, Try again with the catch and no spring.

If it is still free, Re assemble and test.

If this fails to do the job remove the spring and carefully increase its tension by slightly increasing the curvature by carefully bending, Very carefully, no sharp kinks. the spring will break if bent sharply.

A Luger Pistol does not have a hammer, it is fired by the a spring that propels the firing pin upon release by the sear bar. The trigger bar rotates releasing the sear/firing pin engagement after the trigger is pressed that in turn rotates the trigger lever that press on the opposite end of the sear bar causing it to rotate. Stiker fired as opposed to hammer fired. Actually the firing pin on a Luger has quite a bit of mass itself! Look at an exploded view some time of the parts. Thor

Look at the picture and also reference the Techincal information for a parts list, notice, NO HAMMER! Look at gunsparts.com or any other parts list for a Luger pistol, SARCO.com Marstar.com NO HAMMER, really! Thor

Just so you can hear this from more than one source..the Luger has no hammer. That would probably put it in the hammerless class of pistols. It is fired by spring tension on a cocked firing pin. I have had many of them apart, understand the firing mechanism and, lo and behold, no hammers. Don't need no steenkin hammerz.

Dear Grady, please post a picture of yourself in the Rogues Gallery. It is always a good thing to see what the person posting looks like (you know, a face with a name..it's a good thing).

Roadkill, there ain't no hammer. The Luger is not like a .45 or a P-38. It's one of the reasons the weapon is so unique in the world family of weapons. No joke, no hammer.....as we know a hammer to be!
