Default Proud new Luger owner

Hello all a friend of mine found a Luger in their attic that had been there for 40 or 50 years after the war so the story goes. I showed some interest in the rusty old hand-me-down and they generously just gave it to me ! It was rusty and slightly pitted in several places so I began soaking it in motor oil. After a few days I was able to get it open and completely apart . I polished and cleaned each part lightly wet sanding away some of the places where the rust was pitting deeper. I had to replace the extractor, the grip screws, and I bought a magazine for it.

It is a shooter-grade 30 caliber Luger I'm guessing from the 20s from what Ihave read. I wanted to put a serial number online so that maybe one of you guys who knows more about them could tell me more about when it was made and where.

It is matching Numbers the last two numbers of this serial number on several places on it also has an N with the crown on top of it and says Germany on the barrel the number is 71xx with what looks like a cursive O On the barrel. The words "loaded"on the extractor and "safety" are written in German not English there are no other nazi proofs or markings on the pistol. It has the fancy Printed engraved Dmw on the top Thanks for all of your advice and information? I look forward to shooting this soon I will try to post some pictures.

Hello,Matt, and welcome to the forum.

These well made pistols were produced in the mid 1920s for export from Germany.

Your pistol, late in the "O" block, was probably from about 1924.

It's better to remove red oxide by using an oil soaked steel wool or bronze wool as the abrasive. You're less likely to do damage to the rust bluing.

Congrats on a nice gift. The 30 Lugers(caliber) are great shooters.
