Default Interesting Black Widow Bidding...

Interesting bids on AuctionArms.com.

Luger for sale is described as a "42" Mauser with a 1940 chamber date (4-digit) with black grips. The gun is being called a Black Widow. Bids are going over $ 1,100.00 the last time I looked.

I thought, technically, that only "byf's" with 41 or 42 (2-digit chamber dates)with black grips are Black Widows...

Technically there is no such thing as a Black Widow, so it is up to everyone's own interpretation. According to Still the black plastic grips started appearing in late 1939.

Johnny & Pete,

Do you think that there is a subliminal message in the sellers name tag ???

A sort of warning ???

Yes, I agree the name "Scrap Iron" does not instill a high level of confidence in me for that seller.

I also understand that the term "Black Widow" was just assigned by luger collectors over the years. Same as 1914 Navy or 06/24 Bern.

But, back to my original question : isn't it agreed upon by luger collectors that only the 2-digit (41 or 42) BFY's with original blued parts and original back grips are what is known as a "Black Widow" ?

Otherewise, I think chaos and anarchy would rule and lots of guns with black and brown grips could be called Black Widows (or even Brown Widows...).

Pete,

That seems to be what I have gleaned from past postings.
