WW2 Navy corpsman Robert Bush was awarded the Medal of Honor for killing numerous enemy (Pacific Island campaign) while protecting and treating injured Marines. the Navy corpsman on my team in Iraq (2004, 2006) carried both M-4 and Beretta pistol.

The concept of a medic or corpsman being off limits is largely dead in today's conflicts. Only first world nations still respect this idea.
