I'm lost (1915 DWM)

I'm new and dont know what to do (said in joe dirt voice)

This is an awsome site with tons of good info, newly found for me cause I just got my first Luger, its a 1915 matching numbers DWM. I'm quite happy with it, the problem is even with my mad internet yoda searchings I can't find what the 84 on the front strap means. Its alone and centered and just an 84. Is this a unit stock number or "rack" number or do I have a million dollar one of a kind? please help

it is the serial number most likely and under the barrel, is probably the 84 and then something like 8,83 or 8,84

lugers were made in blocks of 10,000 (see the FAQ above) for further info

since they were made in blocks of 10,000 you might have say, the 84th made that year, but that is not considered rare and valuable, sorry.

thanks for the replies. I will get some pictures of it once i get home from work this evening, but the 84 is right in the middle of the frontstrap and can be read horizontally and not vertically

I would say it is the weapon number

Perhaps at one point it had a unit marking, but maybe not, there was a small period of time where armorers were told to just put the unit number on the gun and this might be one of those interpretations, either during war or after the war.

i heard a tale where Hitler smoked himself with a DWM Luger. After discovering the body 84 Russian Soldiers danced on his corpse. The highest Ranking officer in the group kept the luger and had 84 stamped on the frontstrap in memorium to his commrades.

what your telling me is there's the slightest possibility that this may be false?

You do know that its a myth the Hitler shot himself with a Luger right? Or at least thats what they say on the history channel lol. they say he shot himself with a Walther ppk 380. One of his personal carry side arms. But if you really think about it. The body was destroyed and a 380 and 9mm is the same caliber...how could they really tell?

no no no, the 66 DWM was what jesse james carried at the OK corral, collectable to be sure but a different luger all together

No apology necessary. We do like to have fun here as well, but we also like to know who you are before sharing that aspect of ourselves. Not to sound too uptight, but we have had several occasions where new arrivals simply ran at the mouth without adding much to the board. As an Army vet, I'm sure you can appreciate that.
