Default 1939 S/42 Luger/ Need help IDing it

Hello,

First post here. Looking to get some more information on this Luger my dad has had for 30+ years. He's keeping it in the family, but we were just curious as to it's history since we've wondered all these years. So I thought I would ask the expert's. It has all matching #'s as well as one of the magazines are matching. If you would put a value on it, it would just be for fun to know.

Thanks!

Lots of pics

Welcome to the site.

I'll suggest this before someone else does;

Upload your photos here to the site rather than to a photo hosting site such as photobucket. The reason is that many experts on this board have no access to photobucket and will not be able to review your images. Also, for future reference to this post, remote hosting sites often go down and links are lost, which would delete the photos forever and prevent any meaningful research into your pistol.

Alan, what the heck are you doing up?

So, we can say that the top, upper receiver was made by Mauser in 1939 (year) and the S/42 is the code for Mauser).

Welcome to the forum

Ed

Hi Kurt, I'd like to welcome you to the forum also. Your Dad's gun is a !939 S/42 (made by Mauser) that was fitted with a sear safety, which indicates police use. The aluminum based magazine, stamped #2 is also police issue. The holster, as you know, dates from 1934, and the wood based magazine dates from WW1. Best regards, Norm
P.S. I, too, dislike Photobucket. Photos of beautiful young women keep popping up, and I get distracted.

Looks to me you have a very nice 1939 S/42 that most collectors would be proud to own. The pluses are: 1) Matching magazine. 2) Not a lot of 1939 S/42 produced. 3) Sear safety (Police) makes it even rarer. 4) It is a family gun from your dad.
Congratulations!

Tom

Thanks for all the replies! Unfortunately, my dad received this in trade for rent when he was renting out a room in his house in the 70's. The guy got it from his grandfather, but no other story other than that.

I'll try to post the pictures directly to the forum here soon.
