Default Mitchell Luger values?

Hi,

The local gunshop owner I chatted with today asked me if I could help him value a NIB Mitchell Stainless Steel Luger. Box and all accessories are there along with papers.

What do these sell for on the open market?

Marc

From what I've seen, about 700.00....thats what I've seen as a asking price....don't know if they sell at that, they have a pretty bad rep.

Thanks Bob,

I'll let him know. It's his own gun, and I think he is considering selling it.

Marc -

There is this one listed on www.gunbroker.com right now and the seller is asking $920 for it as "new in the box" and unfired.

item number: 213223727 Mitchell Arms American Eagle 9mm Luger, New in Box opening bid is: $920.00 and the "buy it now" price is $970.00

It would not be worth that much to me; however, someone obviously thinks it is worth that much.

These stainless "Lugers" seem to be in demand by people who know very little about Lugers, have never owned a "real" one, and are naive enough to pay high prices for them.

I was very excited when they first came out. I bought a Mitchell in 92 with a 1992 chamber date, the same year my son was born. I planned to pass this gun onto him and use it as an enjoyable shooter until then. After several trips back to the factory I sold it, not wanting to pass junk onto my son. I still have a spare magazine from this gun, which interestingly works flawlessly in my original Luger shooters.

RUN -- don't walk == to the nearest exit in that gun store. Stay away from it at any price. Take it from someone who has experienced it.

Thanks again for all the background.

I have no interest in buying this Luger. And forewarned is forearmed.

The owner just asked me to learn it's current value.

I'll pass the info along.

I have to say I'm a bit disapointed at what I've read about the Mitchell Lugers.

I was fantasizing about how cool a Luger would be for defensive carry. My first thought was to look into the stainless ones. I like stainless for a carry gun, stainless likes me. Seemed a good place to start. I haven't read anything that leads me to believe I should bet my life on one of those guns. In fact, I haven't found any information to lead me to think that any Luger should be considered for a carry gun. Seems they have a reputation for only wanting ball ammo which is only good for target practice or for serving in armies obliged to use ball ammo.

I looked at the Erma 32 and 380 Luger lookalikes. Those don't seem like a good bet for defensive carry. Smaller round and it still wants ball ammo. I do think that I'd buy one if the price was right just because they look like fun, but strictly as a fun gun.

So dissapointing that the modern stainless version of one of the most iconic handguns is not up to the task of being a daily carry. What's the point of a stainless gun that you can't really count on to ride in an IWB holster or in a tackle box then come out and shout BANG at the right time. Bummer.

I still love the look of the Luger and the history of them. CC with one just isn't in the cards.

The Mitchell Luger should not be regarded as a serious gun for serious use. It is nothing more than a curio which sometimes shoots, but usually doesn't. You can say much the same for the Erma look-alikes, pot metal guns not suitable for practical use.

I guess I will have to come to the defense of the much maligned Mitchell luger.
I have had one for years and mine works fine.
However,it is picky about lubrication, type of ammo and how you load the clip.
Would it be my first choice for a personal defense gun? No.
That would be a 1911 variant.

But,if I am just going to the range for a little plinking, its great.
Very accurate and it looks great!

Mitchell is just a name to command a higher price. I deal a lot with AKs and what mitchell does is buy the kits put them on an NDS receiver and sell them for three times the going rate without and quality difference than the same weapon from a good builder at 1/3 the price.
I laugh when I hear what sellers and dealer say about their superior extraordinary quality and value. I would bet some of this spills into the Luger world as well. JMHO.
