Best referance.....

Which is the better referance. Lugers at Random by Charles Kenyon or Imperial Lugers by Jan still? Still trying to I.D the luger I have and get idea of what it's worth..

The "Lugers At Random" covers a much wider time frame (basically all years) whereas "Imperial Lugers" only covers 1900-1918. Both are excellent regerences.

It is true what DOK is saying about the time frame but I can tell you this ..The quality of Jan Stills work in Photography is above most any other books out there. I actually sold my copy of Lugers at Random because I couldn't stomach the lousy photography any longer. With a reprint they should consider reshooting every photo in that book. The written word is one thing but I really like to look at an example of what they are talking about.Looking at a good photo is right next to actually having a sample in your hand. I just purchased Krieghoff by Gibson and I highly recomend to anyone interested in the finer details of not only the Krieghoff but Simson,DWM or Mauser to get a copy. You will be amazed. The wealth of knowledge is unsurpassed. Everything I've always wanted to know but couldn't find anywhere else. Jerry

Hi,

This depends on what your interests are. "Lugers at Random" is a great book for the general all around models and variations telling you some of the details on each variation. Jan Still's book are all great for a more specific group and go into much more detail. Gibson's book on Krieghoffs is a must for Krieghoffs. All of the books have good information, but the more recently published books contain more correct information, as more data has been compiled and more information shared in the last few years. Some of the older books contain information that was thought to be correct at the time, but has since been proven wrong. Which reference books are best for you depends on which models and variations you are interested in.

Intrested in the most accurate and complete information on the DWM Lugers 1914-1918, Hope I got the right one. Also ordered a book "Guide to German Military Small Arms Markings" That way I can get the information I need without putting anyone "on the spot" and to be completly honest,the vast amount of information and opinions that I've gotten here is a bit confusing. No offense meant, The expert advise I've been given here has been invaluable, but, I can't expect you guy's to do an indepth study. I need more information than I can ask for here without imposing on everyone's time and hospitality.

If you are intetested in the Imperial Era Lugers, Bill M is correct, get Jan Still's book "Imperial Lugers". In the Links & Resources section, you can get Jan Still's address and order direct from him. If you do this, he will autograph the book if requested.
