Four digit date mags/grips

!. Are arsenal replacement mags (s/42-marked) ever numbered to the gun ??
2. In WW2 military Lugers, when did they cease numbering the grips to the guns ?? When did they start ??
3. Is there a pattern of waffenamt-marked grips, i.e., are certain series marked, and some not ?? When started....when stopped ??

Looge, It's most probable that all armour's spare mags (code 42 or S/42) left Mauser unserialized and were numbered to guns at the depot or unit level. I doubt that anyone can give you a definative answer about grip numbering at Mauser, as that appears to follow no definate pattern. TH

Didn't see you at Loooooville.. I'm the gray-haired guy that had some P08 police mags on my table at Kansas City. L-ville was a disappoinment...small crowd...less tables. Found a few things I needed, but there didn't seem to be any $ around... Cholly.

Hi loogie, regarding Luger Grips. Generally, and I really mean generally, wooden grips on Military Mauser Lugers were numbered from 1934 (K-Dates) through mid 1935 (G-Dates), then not numbered until early 1937. Then numbered from early 1937 until early 1939 (about the end of 1939 S/42 production. The remaining 1939 production was not numbered. Numbering started again in 1940 and continued for the rest of the Luger Production (1942). Remember, I said GENERALLY!!

Thanx for the info....sounds rather convoluted. Interesting to find out why the stopping and starting of numbering. Any info on when the grips were waffen'd and when not ? With all the Lugers I've had I could never detect a pattern of when grips were and weren't waffen'd. Maybe Jan Still will produce a book about it.... loogee.

Hey loogie, I grew up in Minnesota and have been to Wisconsin quite a few times. Maybe we met there.

I have seen many E/655 and a few E/135 Waffenamt Marked wooden grips. I have seen maybe one example of a S/42 marked grip.

I don't have a clue why the Germans started and stopped numbering the grips like they did!!

Cholly, I've also seen a few straight winged large E/63 marked grips and some with the Gothic (1934) type "S" code. I through out my back a couple of days before the Sept Louisville show, so I did not attend, but will try to make it in Dec. TH

The few S/42 mags I have seen have all been un-numbered.

I have sold 3 or 4 S/42 blank mags on ebay over the last 8 years and I assumed that the new owner was either wanting;

a. A blank mag to be a "replacement" mag

b. A blank to make it a matching mag....

I have seen a couple of S/42 mag's with numbers on them....

I picked up a 1939/42 in the past year that has matching #'d grips...the last two digits, and larger than number size on metal, but of similar font style. cholly.
