Chrome Erfurt Refin Project

Here is my first attempt at a refinish and documentation of the process. I've been playing with this one since last Christmas

I was pleased with the results and will add grips and a magazine to complete the project. Then off the the range.

The research and help form the board was invaluable and actually gave me the idea to try it myself

The wire wheel really did a number on the chrome, huh? I can't even tell anymore...

Thanks Steve, the fine wire wheel and the Brownells nickel stripper did the job.

I had a chrome P08 stripped electrically by a local plating business. They charged 50 dollars and not one bit of buffing, carding, wire wheel, or abrasive of any sort was used. As a matter of fact, the gun had been plated without any buffing originally, and it came back from the plating place looking like a brand new gun. The chrome had completely protected the metal underneath. It was the most perfect Luger I have ever seen.
The plating was removed the same way it had been put on, by electrodes in a bath.
As I understand it, chrome will not stick to steel directly, and the steel must be first nickel plated, and then crome plated. I think the nickel alone would be better looking.

I read several internet posts about people who were not trying to but totally removed all the chrome/nickel from a gun or some other peice of metal.

I followed some of the suggestions and tried commercial drain cleaner, oven cleaner and some weak acids with limited success...and most are extremely corrosive.

Well, you know, not everyone of us has perfect grammar, so I tend to excuse mistakes like tenses anyway. I just thought this was a bit funny, mostly my mis-reading of the sentence.
