Question Asteric

Hi everyone,
I finally got my shooter yesterday, I have a question about.
It is a 1939 code 42 with a S42 toggle train in it. On the right side of barrel next to the firing proff mark is an asteric. It looks the same as in Jan Still's Third Reich book on the bottom left of page 67. Can anyone tell me what this code means? Was it a reject code????
The gun is serial number 35xx t or somewhere in there. It has the eagle/63, eagle/63, eagle/ swat. on the right receiver. The barrel
also has a eagle/63 off center on the top left side on it's side, and it looks like some one has done a little filling on the underside of the barrel.
Any Ideas?
Thanks for help in advance!

Gene,

The asterisk shows up on the Forums as a topic every now and again. It can be found on the occasional P-38 and other pieces of military hardware as well as your Luger. There is lots of speculation, but the plain fact is, there is no evidence whatever to indicate what it really means. Big mystery.

Thanks Dwight,
What do you know about the E/63 on the left side of the barrel, laying down. I have another 1939 code 42 in the mid s range that doesn't have
one at all on the barrel, let alone on that side!
Any thoughts on that? Is it common? Any one.......any thoughts?
thanks again, this forum has been excellent in my personal education on lugers!
