Default 1940 "S" Luger w/unit markings????

At a gun shop, I saw a 1940 Luger (date on chamber) with an "S" on the top of the toggle link. There was only an "S," no "S/42" like others which I have seen. It had wooden grips and on the front strap, was stamped "Zw372" on two lines Zw above the 372. the serial number is 8608.

Can anyone tell me more about this luger?

thank you,

Mike

Mike, Sound like the toggle could be from a late Weimar production Simson luger. I'd be surprised if the numbers match the rest of the gun, unless it's a forced matched DDR rework. TH

Mike,

Is the Zw over 372 stamped horizontally at the bottom of the grip strap ? If so, it is a Zwickau police mark and would be doubtful if on a 1940 dated pistol.

I am in agreement with Tom that it is most likely a parts gun.

Default correction

Correction: On the toggle is "42" not "S". The Zw..." is horizontal.

Cheers,

Mike

Mike, getting me all excited!

A 42 (mauser) is correct for a 1940, but like Ron said, the unit marking sounds odd?

Default unit markings on 1940

Were 1940 lugers ever unit marked?

no, they quit marking I think prior to 1940. Although, anything is possible. Pictures and EXACTLY what the markings are, to include periods, captital letters, etc could help.

It is possible it is NOT unit marked and/or a marking from the years since WW2...

PS: found one posting with a ref of ZW

There were no cities in Saxony beginning with S that appear to have been large enough for a Schupo unit. Observed abbreviations are L, C, D, M and Zw.
This is a quote from Don Maus on a police gun, may not be germaine to the conversation....

I would suggest that you check the pistol carefully for matching serial numbered parts and also take note of the proof marks, both type and location.
