Taunter, your message got cut off... Welcome to the forum!
You can edit your own message, see the icon that looks like pencil and paper. Also, I moved this to the New Collectors area... Was your grandfather Russian? As the US did not make it to Berlin till after the war? Or you meant literally after the war?? And using ALL CAPS is considered YELLING.... ed this is the info we will need to help you: Can you tell us any markings on the gun? Proofs? (see on your left under tech information if you came through www.lugerforum.com ) Tell us what and where proofs and markings are located. There are forms in this section, where you can print out and then write down pertinent information. What serial number is on the gun? To include any letters next to or under the serial number? What year or letters are stamped on the top of the receiver? What initials or letters are on the toggle? Can you provide pictures, to include side, top, etc?

John, I can tell you a lot about your grandfathers luger!
It is a early mauser made in the early 1930's for the nazi's, but right at the end of the Weimar period. it has a "sear" safety added after 1932, sear safety's were only installed on "police" lugers. It also appears to have the magazine safety, which was installed at the same time frame, but was found not to work correctly and were almost universally removed in 1937. the blank receiver (no date) was correct for these guns. The toggle being blank, is commonly refered to as a "sneak", in the mistaken belief by collectors that the germans were hiding rearmenent from the allies, but that is likely untrue. it is better guessed that the toggle was not marked due to the switch over between DWM and Mauser... The holster is a commercial one, or more likely a 1911A1 holster used for the luger, it is likely not one that was worn when the owner had the luger. Value, to me is about $900-$1200. Does the magazine match? Do you have any paperwork that "allowed" your grandfather to bring it back (this is not needed, it was just needed to legally bring it back, this was not always done or the paperwork has been lost. This would have been done after the war). Ed

John,
This is a -very- nice Police Luger, congratulations on having an interesting example. Is there any chance of getting to see the marks under the barrel and the front of the frame? also a good sharp closeup of the right receiver marks? --Dwight |

Your Luger, sn 4140u, was manufactured by DWM (BKIW) in about 1929. Most went to the Prussian State Police. See link below for additional information. Jan POLICE 29 DWM, SN 3541t, RIG Jan C Still http://72.36.207.250/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7570 |

John,
Does your Luger have any markings stamped on the front grip strap?
