OT - For those masochist's among us

I ordered an 1888 Commission rifle from SOG last week expecting the worst and I almost got it. Thankfully I paid the "handpick" fee which must mean that this rifle was only ran over by one truck rather than two.


This is the only mailorder gun that I actually donned rubber gloves before handling it. I immediately wiped it down with paper towels and mineral spirits in an attempt to remove years of dried grease, dirt, grime, and probably several different types of bacteria. Unexpectedly, under all that crap lay a decent well made, interesting weapon with a lot of proofs stampings and emblems. The bolt itself is well made and different in approach from others.


These are sold by SOG as "collector" rifles only, not intended to be shot, however, I know of people that handload and shoot their own ammo without problem. If you don't mind getting your hands dirty, and are interested in "old world" craftsmanship, and especially real old walnut stocks, I would recommend one of these. SOG has just lowered their price to $89 + $10 handpick. Does anyone know of a website that has information about these rifles? Thanks - Bob
