It is the measured bore diameter of the barrel in Millimeters.

Part of the inspection and proof process that all German guns went through, even those sold to the military. Note what John said - it is the measured bore diameter, not the groove or bullet diameter.

Thank you for the responses. Now I slap myself on the forehead not to realize 8.81 is 9mm from land to land!
I was hoping it might have been a code for a unit.
