Default What came first??

The lanyards or the lanyard rings. Were they retained to hold the luger in the blueing process? ~~~ any thoughts? ~~Eric

Tks Ed! Yes I do but also on my 1902 Fat Barrel and my 1908 commercial. Were there any that didn't? Who made those missing lanyards besides Jerrry? Just kidding!

I think this setup is much more effective than the holster pull-up strap.

You will see few if any military pistols without a lanyard ring-sez me just as my eye falls on my M34 Beretta.
Guess its a few if any.
Securing equipment with straps can be a big asset in some uses and just as much a liability as well.

To answer the question. I would have to say that lanyards came first. Men decided that they needed a way to secure their weapons/gear. They tied lengths of rope or strips of leather to them so they would not get lost. Someone said one day: "We need a specific attachment point for this securing rope or piece of leather, so it is not in the way of the working parts of my weapon or gear". Thus the lanyard loop or attachment point was born.
The end

Doug,
I disagree. I drilled a hole in my flint hand axe to attach a thong so that my knuckles would be the only things dragging the ground. Therefore, the attachment point preceeded the lanyard.

I simply tied a thong around a non-specific point on my axe handle and snuck up on you whilst you drilled your hole.... so maybe not?

You had a handle on your axe? Obviously a much later development, so my example still came first.

That is a "Schützenschnur", an award for marksmanship.
