Couldn't help myself

I had been thinking about getting one of the Ohio Ordinance Works 1918A3 BAR (a.k.a. SLR) and decided a few weeks ago to call them to see how long the waiting list was and how long to build once my number came up on the waiting list.

Turns out they had built ahead and actually had some in stock.

So I purchased one with the walnut stock (and California compliant ) and it got to my FFL & I did the paperwork and Kali 10 day wait period then picked it up this past weekend!

I love it and can't wait to get it to the range this weekend.

I haven't put all the hardware on it yet (carry handle & web sling) but will after my first visit to the range.

I find the bolt hold open device interesting which goes into the magazine (will purchase another for the other mag).

It came with a bunch of stuff including two magazines (kali compliant 10 rounds unfortunately) & a neutered flash hider.

I will take more pics this weekend and post them.

oh, and a flash hider would really make this 'safer'

But didn't you know Ed that Kalifornia did a study and found that a 4ft long (nearly double wide) 20 pound rifle is invisible if you can't see the flash!

Also in case of an earthquake where power is lost & no lights at night I can just keep firing 30-06 ammo so I can have light if I need!

Thanks for posting the photos. I have had to repeatedly slap my hand to keep from calling those folks and ordering one. I have ZERO need, but SERIOUS want for that rifle. I don't shoot high power rifles any more due to arthritis in my shoulder(and everywhere else), and the fun would be overshadowed by the pain. I will just live vicariously through you. I will look forward to your range report.....Congrats!!

Flash hiders don't really hide any flash. They spread it out some..Disperse it so to speak but hide it..No.

Gotta watch Steve McQueen in the Sand Pebbles before you go shoot that thing. I seriously love BARS.
Went to the Estrella Warbird Musuem (Paso Roble, CA) this weekend and they had one along with quite a few other machine guns.

Good idea Marc but I went already but I love that movie and will watch it this coming weekend. With things I needed to take care of I only was able to stay st the range for 1 1/2 hours but it was great! The weight definitely dampens recoil that's for sure!

It certainly was an attention getter at the range!

It functioned beautifully with the gas regulator at the smallest setting!

I tried it out with a paper target at 100 yards & then 200 yards and for someone who is more a pistol person I was hitting the target decently at both ranges! I shot mainly in the prone position but towards the end did the last two magazine loads in the standing position. Only when I was standing did I think of asking a range officer to take my pic with the rifle.

The person you see in the prone position (setting up) is my friend Alan (a rifle person) who was able to hit a metal target at 400 yards on the first shot and there was enough energy to have the target's post swinging back and forth for a bit!

The trigger pull is smooth, the feel is great, it is an amazing rifle that I can't wait to get back to the range next weekend

My late father used to say that the BAR was his favorite rifle...even though it drew a lot of enemy fire.... he said he NEVER saw one jam, and you could "load it on Sunday and shoot all week"... it never failed no matter how hot the barrel got!

After my first trip to the range with it I can totally start to understand how your father felt John! It has certainly become my favorite rifle and I intend to shoot it a lot!

I had the opportunity to spend some extended range-time with a full-auto BAR a couple of weekends ago. What a sweet-shooting piece--very controllable from the shoulder on both speeds; accurate and completely reliable with the gas port at the smallest setting.
Drew an audience every time we picked it up!

I own a select fire Winchester made 1918 BAR. They are a pleasure to shoot but a nightmare to disassemble and reassemble correctly. Once you've taken one apart, you are very much impressed with the engineering that went into this firearm.

I own a live BAR 1918 made by Winchester (upgraded to A2 configuration during WWII), but never shot it. It is an impressive, solid and sturdy gun, one of my favourite items of my collection. I simply loved it, I got it not because I'm a long arms collector but, go figure, I loved to saw it and heard it in action on COMBAT! TV show.
Now, enjoy your 1918A3 - it looks like a twin brother of the one I own.

Also Douglas I agree with Richard. If I owned an original I would definitely fire it at least once!

Since I'm in California I am quite satisfied firing it's modern semi-auto commercial version. I just recently fully field stripped it, cleaned it & reassembled for the first time. Very cool but the recoil spring & guide rod were definitely tricky to get back together. It'll take some getting used to.

Here are some pics of it stripped (sorry for the poor quality, got to learn how to use this new phone's camera).

Also pics of the bolt hold open device & installed into a mag.

I picked up a BAR combo tool and mag loader too.
