Needs some more info on this luger if possible

Hello, all I just recently picked up a 1917 DWM luger. I have found this forum to be quit helpful with identifying this luger even before joining. But it did lead me to more questions that I can't seem to find answers for, yet. So I figured I’d join and see if the folks here could help.

All the numbers match on this luger including the grips
A couple of my local gun shops told me that they would say that the luger is around 80-85% grading.

The 6th pic (proof-2.jpg) I barrowed/stole

from this website. Line 15 shows the proof marks for this luger. Which according to the info that i found on this website say that this luger is a German military receiver proof. Found on DWM Lugers 1914-1918. Some one told me that each mark and its position has it own meaning as well as all marks together having a meaning. Is this true or not?

The 4th pic (Barrelmark.jpg) shows a rough drawing (sizing is not correct, best i could do with windows paint) of a mark on the barrel right in front of the proof marks, the top of (what appears to be) the Iron cross is pointed towards the rear of the gun, and the lower case m with long center leg points towards the front of the barrel. Can any one tell me about this mark; I haven't been able to find anything.

The 5th pic (Underrearsight.jpg) shows the markings under the rear sight when it is lifted. Can anyone tell me about these.

I think we need some close ups, in one picture it looks reblued and another it just looks really nice.

Each marking, left to right is an acceptance marking, then the final proof on the right. I think the odd marking you are referring to is another proof eagle, but is either lightly struck or rubbed off.

Hi Dave, and welcome to the forum.

Congratulations on our Artillery Luger...

When you take your closeup pictures, don't use a flash. Take the pictures using indirect (shaded) light outdoors. Use a tripod, and use the closeup setting on your digital camera.

Post the pictures at about 1000 pixels horizontal resolution. Try and get closeups of all the externally visible marks...

Tinker: i can tell you that the finish is equal cross the gun so that might just be a lighting thing. The one peice that I and the local gun shops had questions about as far as reblueing or might had been replaced is the in pic 3; the spring right above and just to the left of the safety. mrerick: I took the best pics i could with the camera. My camera doesn't seem to have a closeup setting that i can find. I'm thinking of talking to a friend who is heavy into photography and seeing if he can give me a hand or getting a new camera. I will try to get some better pics soon and post them.
I will take both of your advise and try to get better pics and post them soon.

BTW I know that the gun is a artillery luger; but is it also known as a P08 or is there a different nomenclature.

It is known as a LP08 (Lange Pistol), not P08.

Ok, I got some better pictures done today. Also I took the gun to a firearms collectors show this weekend and spoke to several of the military firearms collectors there. They all said that the gun had not been reblued or refinished. They also said that all parts appeared to be original; without completely disassembling the gun to be 100% sure. They also said that the gun was defiantly WW1 and could not see a WW2 remarking on it. I ask if they knew what the mark on the barrel was and on one knew.

Now to the pictures, in my original post i posted a picture (the 4th picture) that I drew up using windows paint of a mark I could not identify; after buying a better magnifying glass and getting a better picture my drawing was incorrect.

Picture 5 is the mark in the red square that I am trying to figure out. Does anyone know what this mark is and means?

I would imagine it's the proof test mark, just like the last one (front) of the receiver... best to all,til...lat'r...GT
