I picked up a 1940 police luger and have a couple of questions. Did all barrels have the gun's serial number on the barrel? This one doesn't have it on but has the 8.82 mark on it. What is the strange marking on the side of the barrel-SU 1?. Is the faint EL typical? Last, what is the eagle on the side to the left of the side plate? My 1939 has the sideways U mark and this one has the weird eagle. Thanks for any help you may give. It is really a pretty gun. I had my doubts as to wether it was reblued so I took it to two different gunsmiths and they both said it has definetly not been reblued.

Dave,
I recently posted info on a 1940 Banner close to your serial number on Jan Stills forum. There seems to be a small serial number range with the Su barrel mark. http://luger.gunboards.com/showthread.php?t=12260 Tom |

Dave, Your unnumbered Simson marked barrel is not unusual when used on Nazi era police PO8s. The E/N marking on your receiver and front sight base is correct for 1940 and later commerical & police contract Mauser PO8s. TH
