Default Qualifying

I've read that most military 4" P-08's had their sights regulated for 50 meters, and my experience bears that out. Does anone know ( or where I might find out) what the size of the target WW! or WW2 Wehrmacht soldiers were trained with, and what the time limits of fire were? IN other words, what did it take to "qualify" ith these pistols? best, MC

Over 50 yards with an unstocked luger, sounds optimistic to me to even hit a may sized target. I seem to recall that the sights were set at the factory for 15 meters (just under 50 FEET). TH

The captions all indicate 50 meter targets.

Mr. Smith GREAT pictures. Could I ask where you got them? ( maybe out of the same book) The black at 50 m looks to be about one foot diameter on the last one? What do you think?

Although not an expert the three Lugers I have ( a M1906 7.65, a DWM '29 H.P. marked and a BYF 42- all in great shape & matched) I find that they all shoot about 6" low at 50 feet. This with 124 gr Federal on the 9's and Fiocchi on the 7.65) I know the original ammo is probably somewhat of a higher velocity, but not enough for current ammo to be six inches off, no?

They are all incredibly accurate & reliable. When I'm having a good night, 3 in one hole at 50' is not unusual.

I wonder why they made the signts so small. Something a bit larger would not take up much room or snag, but would really help to extract the incredible accuracy of these guns.

Does anyone know what type of sights the Swiss used on their target models, or a source for these? I'd like to get a spare toggle train, put on adj sights and see what these would do. thanks MC

Originally the Luger was not expected to be accurate beyond 80-110 meters. The army decided to "regularize" the sight for 50 meters, and this is specified in the 1913 Inspection and Acceptance instructions. This was a modification carried out in 1913 along with the holdopen retrofit. Lugers so retrofitted have a small e/letter stamp on the front sigt base. (Still, Walter, G¶rtz & Bryans)

And 50 meters it was.

Testfiring was also done at 50 meters. Funnily enough the contemporary military manuals fail to report it. The Swiss 06/29 manuals mentions the 50 meter sight, and of course, the LP08 sight starts at 50 meters.

Hitting a man sized target at 50 meters is pretty straightforward with a P08, one handed stance. It makes sense. I also have an old 'trefferbild' which again shows the pistol shooting distance of 50 meters.
