I was offered 700$ for a mismatched luger, I think it is a 20s comm, the frame is police marked.
the buyer did something I am concerned about, he wants to send me 4500$ have a ffl dealer send me the lisc. and then I am supposed to keep the 700 plus 100 for my trouble and ship a check for the balance to the ffl dealer. I cant think of why, but is sounds very strange. why on earth would any one send some one they did not know that amount of money? The check maybe is bad and I ship out funds and loose my gun and money? I just cant think of any reason that some one would do a deal like this and it has me on edge. what do you guys think. any one ran into a scam like this before? |

He isn't from Nigeria by chance? He is most probably a con artist trying to seperate you from your money or pistol. It would be nice for those of us on the forum to have a bit more information on this person.

Edwood, Sounds fishy on the face of it but you are in the drivers seat as I see it. Tell the guy OK...send the $. Go to your bank and make positively sure the check clears with a guarentee from your bank.
Pitfalls...The check is stolen. He is a money launderer. Ask advice from your bank. You will not know what type of tiger you have taken hold of untill the guy sends you something. You can always send it back uncashed if you or you adviser at the bank don't like it or if it proves to be stolen or bogus you can report it to authorities. You can do a google search on the guy and see who he is....Out of state or country? I think it sounds odd enough to stay away from but then I have a powerfull curiosity. Jerry Burney

This is a scam, and various versions of it are being pulled off with increasing frequency. Consider the fact that $700 is a VERY good price for a mismatched 20 Commercial and the whole deal smells fishy. In all probability it is more than likely you will end up without your Luger and his check will bounce. But if you still want to go ahead with the deal, make sure his check is good before you send the gun and your check. If his check is good, it is a money laundering scheme to the tune of $3700, and you will have contributed to some cause or illegal operation that you ordinarily would never support.
At the last Tulsa show a dealer showed me a cashier's check that was totally bogus. The same scam was offered to him as it was to you. The dealer presented the check to the proper authorities, who identified it as counterfeit. If he had gone through with the deal, he would have been out a rare firearm and a couple of thousand dollars.

Thanks for the mail.I am okay with the price and details of the gun.My associate in the states will issue a check of $4,500 to you in which you are to deduct the asking price of the gun plus shippment which i believe is $695 and have the remaining funds transfered to My FFL Dealer who will give you his address for the shippment. Also he will be using the funds to get my License and some other Documents to own the Gun.I am aware of the stress and hassles so i am compensating you with an additional $100 so kindly get back to me with your full name, home address and all your contact phone numbers with go ahead to send the payment and the assurance that i can trust you with the remaining funds.
Awaits your mail soonest. this is a copy of the email I was sent. the email was sent from bp2393@yahoo.com he wanted my phone number so I gave him my cell phone, the one I am droping, and a post office box. I try to keep people from knowing just were I live as there are some off center people out there. |

Be very afraid and do not proceed with this transaction without consulting with law enforcement... I believe there is an FBI website for internet fraud... find it and use it.

Odds are 99.999999% it's a scam and the cashier's check is bogus. I've been offered the same sort of thing selling a fairly valuable calculator. They are really after the refund you are supposed to send them and probably couldn't care less where the pistol ends up.
It's a variation on the Nigerian scam but these days the Nigerian scam and its varients will often use addresses outside Nigeria. I suspect other scam artists are copying the Nigerians. I passed on the offer and sold my calculator to a legitimate buyer. |

also, that many money orders look real, get "cashed" by the bank by a bank teller, but YOU are still responsible for the money when the money order does not make it through the system.
As others have said, this is a common scam and do not do it. ed

They not only use cashiers checks, but bogus Postal Money orders. The Nigerian scam.
It goes something to the effect of.... ~ I sold my car to an American. He sent me US Postal money orders which I can't cash in my country. I will send you the money orders to cash for me. Keep $200 for your trouble and send me the balance in cash by registered mail. ~ A very common scam. Ron

I sold a gun part (not Luger) and got a cashier's check from a fellow. I checked it out and it was counterfeit.
It was the same deal; "here is $375 for the parts and please send the extra $1,500 to my buddy ..." Just a scam. David Jackson

STOP! Call your local Police and ask for a Detective and tell them about it. Please. Over the phone they have the time to listen to you. And they enjoy these types of queries. Wouldn't you?. The Detectives are ordinary people and will listen and give an opinion of what they think about it. It couldn't hurt. They would like to see you get a good deal. They would also like to see that you don't get scammed. You best friend in any situation is that non emergency number. There are lady dispatchers, detectives and guys with guns to protect you. You can tell those lady dispatchers anything and it is just between you and them... I had a robbery. I said " my drawers were open". They said I should leave that out.
