Dear Hugh:

Is harder necessarily better for gun metal? A soft center with proper heat treatment would seem a better way to go to me.

I had a 1936 Mauser rifle, years ago, that was extremely hard. It was so hard the the Smith had a hell of a time drilling it for a scope.
