The seller gave you the correct details on the meaning of the unit marking.

The 173 Regiment was part of the 34 Infantry Division, the 223 Infantry Division and the 115 Infantry Division during WW I. It battled on both the Eastern and Western Fronts during the war.

A more detalied battle history can be found in the Book HISTORIES OF TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY-ONE DIVISIONS OF THE GERMAN ARMY WHICH PARTICIPATED IN THE WAR (1914-1918)
