I wonder if the experts could help identify a holster I recently got. I thought it was a 1904 holster, but on a closer look I think it is Portuguese, for the M2 Luger.

The holster has the compartment for the "T" cleaning rod and the small one for the pin punch. The only mark is "AE" stamped on the inside back of the holster. Pics below, I hope.

Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Looks like a Portuguese Royal Navy Holster to me...and it is in very nice shape... I can't comment on whether or not it is a reproduction ... but it sure looks nice.

Here is a photo from one that is prominently displayed in the member gallery...

Place a note in the Navy Luger forum and ask Tom A to take a look at it... or maybe Jerry Burney might also know here in this forum...

I can't say it is not a repro, but it would have to be the best darn repro Luger holster I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of repros of the German army type. Yes, it is in excellent condition, and I will e-mail better photos if anyone wants.

I am about 99% certain you have correctly identified it as a 1906 Portuguese M2. It is definitely for a Portuguese (AE marking) and is for a 4 3/4" barrel, rather than the 4" Navy. Nice looking holster. Send me a PM if you are considering selling.

It is a Porto GNR, The AE is the key. It indicates the Army of the Republic, which came after Manuel 2 became the waiter on Faulty Towers...thats a joke, but the piece is GNR leather. They typically are priced at about $200 at gun shows and seldom sell as there were so few GNRs made (483? IIRC)

At the risk of disagreeing with someone whose opinion I value, I do not think this is a GNR. The GNR is a really unique holster with a double belt loop that extends well above the top of the holster. I believe that the A.E. means "Arsenal do ExÃ?Â©rcito" or Army Arsenal (this per Bender). You are right about the small number of GNRs. I feel lucky to have a very nice example with an equally nice holster. I think the production number is 564.

I apologize for shooting from the hip; the picture did not open and I was opining based on the verbal discription only and from memory; as I am on client site away from references. If the belt loops are as described, then it must be a late M2.

I was fortunate enough to have owned two GNR rigs, one I bought from Golden State Arms, in the late '60's and another in the '90's when the price had gone up well over 1000%. They are very nice guns with a certain intrigue and mistique, but they are all now in my past as lovers of yore.

I apologize to the group for substituting memory for documentation.

Are the GNR mag holders worth preserving? There are a couple in my box o stuff that I use to store the old mags in. Maybe they should come in out of the garage?

Yep. They are also fairly scarce. The one that I saw had GNR stamped on it. Does yours?

If I remember right they are stamped GNR in big caps on the back. My sister is going down there and I will have her bring them back. I think I got them from SARCO about ten/fifteen years ago. They look to be german mfg. Don't know , the only marks are the GNR.

I got the holster wrapped around a 1940/42 that is about 99% and looks to be unfired. Mag doesn't match, though, and has no numbers. But the holster really belongs to nothing in my collection, so it is for sale.

Jim, I am not sure what you mean by "wrapped around the axle" regarding PM's but poor manners is unacceptable behavior and is not tolerated on this website and that is what makes us different than all the other gun sites... If people don't play by the rules... they're gone.

Your Admin staff (John D., Dok, and me) and the moderators work to keep this a "safe" place to visit regardless of your gender or age...

Hi, John,

I think there is a misunderstanding. By "wrapped around the axle" I meant that the PM process on some sites is very complex, and messages seem to have either gotten lost or I can't get to them. (One site lets you read the PM, but then logs you off and you have to log back in again to see anything else.)

That is why I generally prefer to use e-mail if someone wants to contact me. I know there can be problems with that, but I don't foresee any on this forum.

I was not referring to any "nastygrams" and I certainly did not mean to imply a distrust of anyone here.

No problem Jim... I just wanted to reassure you that we run a "clean" operation here and the software is very stable... You don't get logged out accidently like you do on some boards where the discussion software is home grown.

The PM system on this board allows you to keep 60 messages on file at any one time in your mailbox and is accessed by simply visiting your profile.
