Hi Pete! The discs are just punched out of sheet steel and are approx. .020" thick.. I believe they are just polished steel, and not stainless, although some show a hint of plating, but then again, it could just be age and/or varnish... The discs are pressed in, (interference fit) and the only way I've seen them come out is when the wood rim around the disc is worn to a point to where the tension is released on the disc.. and they then just fall out... I believe it is strictly an appearance item, although their presence would retard wear somewhat, right at the grasping points in the bottom... all of the other bottom dimensions are identical!
