Dwight, believe it or not I think that the gun may be salvageable. A friend of mine had an 1873 Winchester in similar condition. With nothing to loose he used a welder to pool molted steel into the pits. Once cooled he machined down the area and then blued it after evening out the temper.

If it makes you feel better I have a 1921 DWM commercial that's in worse shape.
