ID help for early Magazine..PHOTOS

These are the markings on the bottom of magazine.
There are not any numbers present..Thanks in advance for any help...Ken

Hello Ken,

I am of the understanding that the "checkering" pattern on Erfurt magazine follower buttons is very unique in being of a square pattern with flat tops.

Take a look at the photo study I did in the Member's Gallery on page 4 in a folder titled "Pete's Erfurt Magazine Study".

Does your magazine look like it might have had its wooden bottom removed/replaced ? That is, does the securement pin show evidence of being driven out and re-installed ?

The pin does not show any sign of being moved.
The ends are pure and unblemished.

Pete, you are correct, my double proofed Erfurt mag has the square checkering with flat tops.

Hi Herb,

Actually, learned this tip from Jan Stil's book, IL, on page 82 and locally from Mike Krause in San Mateo, CA...have seen this consistently with the Erfurt magazines I have had a chance to look over...(15-20 over the past couple of years...).

Russ Withem tricked me at one of the past Reno gun shows. He had a nice Swiss metal-insert magazine that looked so nice I overlooked the fact that it had an Erfurt follower button. Honest Russ, of course, pointed it out to me..

well, assuming somebody will look at this thread again... I have a magazine for my 1915 DWM with "matching" number, but with the square/flat pattern follower button. I have strong reason to believe that the wood bottom was sanded down and renumbered, for while the sides are chipped and rough, the bottom is considerably smoother (thought there is no change in wood color), it also has no suffix and is devoid of all other markings altogether. Does this follower button mean that this is DEFINATELY a doctored erfurt magazine? Feeling rather ticked off right about now...

WB, If your 1915 DWM is a Police marked PO8, it's quite possible that the Weimar Police may have renumbered (with large digits and no suffix) a mag to match. Usually, these mag bottoms with also have a #1,2 or 3 above the serial number. Unfortunately, the is the same method that the DDR used to match up mags to their reworks, so hard to tell sometimes. while what you said about flat and square checkering corresponds with a random check of my Erfurt magazines, Jan Stills does not actually say on page 81 of Imperial Lugers that the checkering is square. Only that they are flat. He does say that the quality at Erfurt fell off in the later war years. I read that to mean that anything goes.

The double letter/crown markings identifies this mag as an early Erfurt one.The lack of serial numbers identifies it as a spare mag from the armourer's chest or as a spare mag issued toghether with a LP08 rig+mag pouch/s.The button has been replaced with a non-original one.
