'Neutral' meant selling to everyone and profiteering from the rest. Swiss banks were quite helpful in hiding the spoils of war and frustrating attempts of Jewish heirs to get access to the accounts of their perished ancestors.
So I always look at Switzerland's role during WW2 with some reservations. They were, however, stuck in the middle of a mess, and that brings its own challenges. The Netherlands, neutral during WW1 saw a similar scenario. They pissed off the British by selling to Germany, for example. A complex game, neutrality. |
