That's basically what the little tool I made for the job does. Looking straight on at its end, the tip of the rod presents a "paisley" or yin-yang shape. The thin tail of the paisley slips behind the spring, then the tool is rotated to ramp the spring into its well in the block until full diameter can pass. Then the tool is pushed out by the pin.

I haven't specifically checked for the larger wooden Erma grips for a while. They used to appear fairly frequently on eBay and GB. But none are listed at the moment, as you've reported. I have, however, several pairs in stock, shipped price $45.

Original Luger grips do come close, but the full-sized Erma grips will save lots of work in the areas of the top tab and the mag release notch.
