The pistol was likely refinished.
The numbers you found would be a unit mark identifying the military unit and weapon number. You may find our FAQ document useful. Just follow the FAQ link at the top of the page.

I was wondering if perhaps the "R" in the grip marking might actually be a "B". Might have part of the letter erased with the refinish. Could you look at it again?
