Amberg Arsenal...?
Read one terse sentence in Fred Datig's book about the rumor of possible Amberg arsenal luger production or reworks...
Did any Amberg's surface, or was this just some speculation at the time in the 1950's when Datig wrote ? Regards, Pete... |

I've not heard or read of Lugers either manufactured or repaired/re-worked by the Imperial Arsenal at Amberg. To the best of my knowledge, Amberg produced mostly rifles. Same for the arsenal at Danzig.

Sorry, Walker...
On page 127 in Fred A. Datig's book, The Luger Pistol (revised edition, 1962 5th. printing) is where this Amberg reference is mentioned...in foot note # 1. Regards, Pete... |

Pete, I may not have been as clear as I could have been with my reply. Sorry.
I'm not at all doubting your reference to Datig's remark. I'm only saying that, to the best of MY knowledge, there's been no further reports or evidence of Amberg involvement with manufacture or repair of Lugers. Having said that, it's possible that something has appeared in "AUTOMAG" that I'm unaware of or even discussed on the old forum to which I didn't belong. In all my readings, I've found no mention of Lugers in connection with Amberg. |

Hi,
I also doubt that they ever manufactured them. Perhaps they did an occasional rework or repair. Tooling up for luger production was so darn expensive and complicated that there were never more than 3 production sets in existance at the same time. The transition from the Simson tooling to Krieghoff is rather puzzling, for example. Krieghoff categorically denied that they took over the Simson tooling, but that they developed new tooling based on the Simson one. I guess the fact that Simson, a Jewish company, was seized by the the German authorities in the late thirties has something to do with that... Perhaps they (Krieghoff) tried to avoid having to pay damages after the war? |
