I contacted Estes Adams about doing exactly that. He didn't want to touch it. I guess he figured that the machining would be so labor intensive that the price would be unacceptable. I have the highest respect for him so, when he declined my inquiry, I left it at that. I would very much like to get steel legs made but I wouldn't know where to start and I would be very wary of shipping mine off to someone I don't know. I have heard far too many horror stories of parts shipped off never to be seen again.

Judging from the crystalline structure of the break, the legs are cast, probably Zamak. If they were machined from aluminum bar stock the 'break' would look different, or not break at all. Shoei is a class act in modelguns, but maybe not so much for real rifles.

Machining the entire leg, from what little I can see, would be time intensive whether steel or aluminum. For an individual with access to a mill or lathe, it would still be pretty much a labor of love.

I think that if you really wanted a bipod, then modifying an M14 bipod would be the best bet. Keep the SMG bipod for static display; the M14 for shooting.
