My advice?

Skip Windows 8-8.1. Run by it. Don't stop, don't look back (to me, it was similar to that all-star Microsoft hit we all loved to hate - Vista - but that's just my opinion) ..

Windows 7? Yes - awesome OS - and the drivers are all there, and the HCL was totally re-written - and it rocks...

Windows 10? Absolutely terrific for me so far on all four of my workstations (two image editing, one coding and one Surface Pro 3). Takes a bit - BUT, coming from Windows 7 - is pretty easy to migrate into...

Just my $0.000002 - probably worth less...

Since John D. offered that advice, I have obtained a Dell Latitude D620 laptop and several extra blank SATA HDDs for it. I also obtained Windows 7, 8, and 10 and installed each on a separate HDD for this laptop. I also have my trusty WinXP O/S on one of them as well (and just this last week, I installed Win 2000 for a lark on another spare HDD).

I had two desktop PCs crash, and have them back up and running and finally found time to install Classic Shell on the Windows 7 laptop HDD. Classic Shell is a Classic Windows shell replacement for 7, 8, and 10 that closely resembles the Classic Windows shell last found in Windows XP. I've used this shell since Win95 OSR2 through the many Windows O/S's and am fully comfortable with it. Classic Shell has many options that I am still experimenting with on Windows 7 and I can say it is a great program! I've attached a couple screen grabs so you can see it includes a close copy of Classic Windows Explorer. It also restores the Classic Start Menu, which is another plus.

If, like me, you've been reluctant to upgrade to the bloatware that is Windows 7/8/10, be aware that Classic Shell restores Windows to a more user-friendly and familiar O/S.

It is also free.

I've also had to re-install my browser to the new HDD on this PC and had the Address Not Found problem with the default DNS adresses in the TCP/IP settings. I've changed them to the settings John D. advised and am happily 'borin' through the ether' again!

Thank you again for your assistance, Jihn D.
